Celebrate International Sushi Day At These Sacramento Spots

June 18, 2020 by cdiez Leave a Comment

International Sushi Day only “rolls” around once a year and today is the day! Check out a few of my favorite local spots where you can grab a roll to celebrate the occasion!

Kru
Brighten up your day with the “Sunshine” roll at this celebrated midtown sushi mecca. Created by chef-owner Billy Ngo, this modern classic is stuffed with crispy tempura shrimp, spicy tuna, and chunks of fresh green apple, which add a tartness and crunchy texture. On top of the roll, you’ll taste special toppings like seared walu (lean Hawaiian sea bass) and arare (tiny crunchy rice crackers), as well as sushi staples like fresh avocado, micro cilantro, and crispy fried leeks. Finishing off the dish are drizzles of Kru’s signature house-made sauces, including a creamy spicy garlic sauce and sweet chili oil. 2516 J Street, Sacramento. krurestaurant.com

Taros
Taro’s By Mikuni, located off of Arden Way at The Arden Fair Mall, has it all! From the conservative to the adventurous, there are delicious pairings for even the pickiest of palettes. Not to mention, the staff are polite, accommodating, and extremely friendly. If you prefer something fresh and light, try the fresh “Nigiri” or the “Citrus Blossom”, which is a combination of lightly grilled white tuna, sweet orange dressing, and ponzu sauce with white onions and sesame seeds. If you like something a little more hearty, try the “Peter Two” roll with seared tuna, eel, avocado, spicy tuna, crab mix, panko shrimp, spicy dream sauces, masago, and onion. 1735 Arden Way, Sacramento. mikunisushi.com

Taikos
Taiko Sushi located in the Milagro Centre in Carmichael serves up delicious specialty rolls made with a creative flair and the freshest fish – enjoy customer favorites such as their “Rocky” roll (tempura shrimp, cream cheese with inari, spinach, and masago), “Fiji” roll (tempura asparagus, avocado, topped with salmon and wakame) and “Super Bowl” roll (soft shell crab, crawfish salad & cucumber topped with unagi, snow crab and avocado). 6241 Fair Oaks Blvd. Carmichael. taikosushi.com

Kura Revolving Sushi Bar
Want to experience the flavors and traditions in Japan with a fun spin? Check out Kura Revolving Sushi Bar in Sacramento. Their unique dining experience features a revolving conveyer belt with fresh items ready to enjoy.Enjoy fresh Nigiri and delicious rolls like their “Spicy Garlic Tempura Philadelphia” roll. Not in the mood for sushi? They also have ramen and tempura dishes.  1600 Ethan Way #10, Sacramento. Kurasushi.com

We’re Going to Bounce Back…

June 15, 2020 by cdiez Leave a Comment

Over the past few months, many of us put our lives on hold and practiced social distancing while we waited for the curve to flatten. Now that we are through the worst of it, we are getting back into the swing of things and adjusting to our new normal.

Under a new state ordinance announced last Friday, Sacramento, Yolo, Placer, and El Dorado counties have shifted into Phase 3 and are now permitting schools, movie theaters, bars, campsites, casinos, day camps, gyms, museums, zoos, spectator-less sports, hotels and more to reopen.

In this month’s newsletter, we take you to some of our favorite locally-owned businesses that are back in action and share some fun “social distance approved” weekend activities and getaways to help you bounce back. We also take a look into the current real estate market and its promising future.

Are you ready to venture out and support local restaurants, shops, and recreational grounds? Check out our “Eat. Stay. Play.” guide below!

Here’s a look at some of our favorite locally-owned restaurants that are now open and ready for your business and support!
  1. The Porch Restaraunt & Bar – Sacramento: The Porch Restaurant was created to give Sacramento a unique dining experience and something out of the ordinary. With a California approach to authentic southern dishes, the Porch is a space where people can come to have a great meal, a refreshing cocktail, and forget about the worries of everyday life. As their name suggests, they even have a charming porch out front where you can enjoy your meal. Be sure to make reservations ahead of time and check out their new safety policies and measures before your next outing.
  2. Serritella’s – Carmichael: Craving Italian? Serritella’s has been a local favorite since 1965. They specialize in Italian food made from scratch like their rich lasagna, mushroom-filled Marsalas, delicious pasta, and tasty shrimp dishes. Their “hot out of the oven” complimentary breadsticks are also delicious! They recently moved to the new Milagro Centre in Carmichael. Call ahead to make reservations here.
  3. Kru Sushi – Sacramento: Kru is a contemporary Japanese restaurant in Sacramento that delivers the freshest ingredients and plates. If you have a special occasion, Kru will be sure to impress with its delicious food and gorgeous atmosphere! In the mood for a roll? Their Firecracker Roll filled with crab, avocado, and topped with salmon, spicy garlic sauce, tempura crisps, jalapenos, and kimchee ponzu is always an excellent choice. You also can’t go wrong with their fresh Nigiri. Reservations are required. Make them online here or call 916.551.1559 to secure your table.
  4. Shangri-La – Fair Oaks: Shangri-la is a vibrant, chic restaurant and bar in the heart of Old Fair Oaks. They have an expansive outdoor patio so you can relax and soak in the sunshine during the day or enjoy the fire pit at night. Their kitchen offers a versatile menu that features locally sourced, seasonal ingredients transformed into elevated comfort food at its best. Order anything from burgers and mac & cheese to tacos and miso salmon. Their custom handcrafted cocktails are nothing short of amazing. Reservations are required. Click here to explore, their menu, check out their new safety policies and guidelines, and reserve a table.
  5. Back Bistro – Folsom: Craving something fresh and light for dinner? Check out Back Bistro in Folsom Palladio. This locally-owned California bistro features a beautiful large quartz bar wrapped around a see-through wine wall. They also have a huge patio, which is great for people-watching. Enjoy a seasonally-focused lunch and dinner menu with 30 inspiring wines by the glass, microbrew beers, and premium cocktails. Check out their menu or make reservations here.
  6. Nixtaco – Roseville: Nixtaco in Roseville has been locally owned since 2015 and features authentic “farm to fork” Mexican cuisine using the finest ingredients and traditional techniques. Everything down to the tortilla is authentic and made from scratch. Check out their raving Yelp reviews here with plenty of recommendations and photos to help you with your next order.
Wanna get away? Seeing as most of us have been sheltering in our homes for the past few months, we thought we’d share a few “social distance approved” ideas and overnight trips in the greater Sacramento area. If you don’t feel comfortable staying overnight, these spots are close enough to make a “daycation” out of it.
  1. Camp Far West Reservoir: Bring your boat, jet skis, pool floats or fishing pole to Camp Far West for a fun day at the lake. Camp Far is located at the junction of Placer, Nevada and Yuba counties and is about a 45-minute drive from Sacramento. Enjoy a 2,002 surface-acre lake with 29 miles of shoreline, rolling hills and oak trees. You can make a day trip out of it or book ahead for a fun-filled weekend of camping. Overnight reservations are booking up fast and can only be made on Monday and Tuesday from 8 am to 2 pm by calling 530-633-0803.
  2. Folsom Lake: Folsom Lake & Recreation Area is another great opportunity to immerse yourself in the great outdoors by hiking, running, biking, boating, fishing and more. If you enjoy fishing, Folsom Lake offers trout, catfish, big and smallmouth bass or perch. Make sure to stop by and see the historic Folsom Powerhouse -once called “the greatest operative electrical plant on the American continent”! Click here to see which areas are currently open and which are closed.
  3. Lake Tahoe: Lake Tahoe is the perfect escape from both the summer heat and your home! The area is infamous for its wide array of recreational activities including water sports, boating, hiking, and more. Both North and South Lake Tahoe are excited to welcome guests back to the region with a variety of hotels, bed & breakfasts and vacation rentals now open to the public. If you’d like to stay overnight, check out these South Lake Tahoe accommodations and places to stay in North Lake Tahoe.
  4. Apple Hill: Take a scenic drive just past Placerville and visit the select Apple Hill farms, wineries, and bed & breakfasts. Several of the Apple Hill wineries began wine service last month including Fenton Herriot Vineyards, Edio Vineyards, and Madrona Vineyards. Check out their latest blog post with additional information here and their upcoming events schedule. Hoping to stay overnight? Plan your stay here.

If you are not able or ready to visit stores and restaurants in person just yet, there are still things you can do to support your local businesses:

  1. Shop online or via phone. Many local retailers have online shopping available; local and independent shops are oftentimes more than willing to help you get what you need via phone, if necessary.
  2. If you do not need anything specific at this time but still want to support local, purchase gift cards to spend later in various storefront businesses.
  3. For restaurants, order takeout or delivery.
  4. You can buy gift cards from many local restaurants, too.

Now that we’re past the worst of the storm and are returning to normalcy, you might be asking yourself, “How has the real estate market been impacted?”

According to the Sacramento Association of Realtors® most recent housing statistics, the numbers continue to look good for real estate. Inventory is tight but prices are stable and low-interest rates continually hold up the market. We believe the market will be the one shining light in the economy in the next six months to a year.

Porch Envy Is So Real It Has Its Own Hashtag

June 10, 2020 by cdiez Leave a Comment

As the old song goes, “It’s summertime and living is easy…” It’s even easier (and a bit more pleasant) if you have a porch. Aside from increasing your home’s charm factor, this amenity offers you an outdoor space where you can relax or entertain depending on the day and your preferences.

But just because you’ve got one that doesn’t necessarily mean you’re making the most of it. If your porch isn’t living up to its full potential, perhaps you just need a little inspiration.

Check out these covetable spots that explain why porch envy is a popular hashtag. Go ahead, pour a tall glass of lemonade, you’re going to want to sit and savor this one.

Peace and quiet

IDX Image

This bohemian chic porch looks warm and inviting yet pretty chill at the same time. That chair swing could quickly become your favorite summertime hangout. You’ve gotta love this ivy wall for the privacy it provides.

Outdoor dining room

IDX Image

If just the thought of al fresco dining makes you hungry and you’ve got the room, adding a table and chairs will transform your porch into the best outdoor café in town. You won’t want to dine indoors again until your food gets cold. Very cold.

Evening elegance

IDX Image

Porches aren’t only popular during the daylight hours. With the help of lights and candles, you can enjoy this space well past dusk. Fluffy blankets and pillows make it warm and welcoming even when temperatures drop. Battery-operated candles eliminate fire-hazard concerns and add a cozy feel on the windiest days.

Swing time

IDX Image

Swings and porches are a match made in heaven. Talk about the ultimate in luxury, this bed swing practically screams, “Nap time!”. A lamp brings a touch of the indoors outside and allows you to read or play board games long after the sun sets.

Host a crowd

IDX Image

The right set-up offers you ample seating, so rather than hide out inside all day, you and your guests can enjoy fresh air in a serene setting. If you can’t fit a dining table, a smaller one will work well for hors d’oeuvres and light snacks.

Small but stunning

IDX Image

Pressed for space? You don’t have to sacrifice style. Plants and an outdoor area rug pretty up even the most petite places.

Simple yet chic

IDX Image

This porch proves you don’t need a lot of decoration to create an inviting space. A lush plant paired with a plush carpet take this area from plain to perfect pretty quickly.

Rock ‘n’ roll

IDX Image

Rocking chairs have always found a welcome home on a porch. They’re synonymous with good storytelling and the simplicity that most strive for all summer long.

The good stuff

Up your comfort factor by bringing indoor furniture outside. Ceiling fans keep those balmy breezes circulating while draperies offer privacy and style.

Floored

IDX Image

If you want to add a pop of color without painting your house, focus on the floor. Choose a hue that complements your home and your furnishings and watch the space come to life.

Winter inspiration

Long after the warm weather ends, you can still savor those perfect porch moments by adding the element of fire. Swap out your lemonade for S’mores and you’re all set.
